A TRIBE CALLED QUEST: Explain Outside Lands Cancellation

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • It will mean a lot when they finally get a chance to perform in the Bay for the fans and Phife's wife.
  • Can you blame them?
  • Phife's only been gone for a little over a year -- the wounds are still fresh.
  • Rest in power, Phifer.
  • Did they do a disservice to the fans by canceling the show? Or do true Tribe fans understand?
  • This sounds like a weak for such a great group. You just go out and do it.

A Tribe Called Quest wrote an open letter this week explaining why they cancelled out of the Outside Lands Festival twice on short notice over the weekend.

According to the group, they were still paralyzed by the loss of Phife Dawg -- a former Bay Area resident -- in March 2016. The thought of performing in his old stomping grounds was too much for the group to overcome emotionally. They wrote, "Our performance at the festival has been months in the making and in those months we have been fraught with an emotional and eager excitement to touch the stage in the place where Phife Dawg made his home."

The group continued, "In show business there is a notion that the 'show must go on' no matter what. Sometimes though, when you have lost someone close, you are riddled with the notion that there is no going on. That Friday morning upon traveling to San Francisco, a wave of grief was still on us and in that moment we could not see the 'on' to go on to. Eventually though in face of loss, you find that glimmer of light to bring you to your center and you find the 'on'."

By the time they finally found the "on" on Sunday night, it was already closing curfew.

The Tribe promised that they will "correct this and regain your confidence" soon. (LA Times)
